THE SHORT ANSWER

Assess driving-school value from fulfilled and collected instruction after recurring instructor, fleet and administrative costs. Define owned/leased vehicles and actual program permissions separately, then match closed evidence on earnings and included assets. A universal multiple, course booking or vehicle replacement quote does not independently establish value. The hour illustration covers specified costs only; it is not annual earnings or a certified appraisal.

Match the valuation method and instruction model

SBA sale guidance describes income, market and asset approaches.

(SBA: closing or selling a business)

Choose the appropriate method with the advisor. Seek actual closed driving-school transactions matching programs, classroom/online/behind-the-wheel delivery, geography, scale, seasonal collections, owner duties, fleet and premises scope. Record earnings definitions, vehicle ownership and unknown fields. Generic education comparables, asking prices and fleet quotes are separate evidence from completed matched business sales.

Do not choose an unsupported universal driving-school SDE band or automatic premium from brand age, school contracts or owner hours. Distinguish owner-operator SDE from earnings after permanent instruction and management. Explain assumptions and source dates before applying a comparison; a turnover or car-count rule does not resolve the actual economics.

Calculate completed-hour collections and specified costs

Reconcile unique students, course packages and completed instruction separately. Trace invoices, discounts, make-ups, cancellations, refunds and receipts through accounts and cash. Explain scheduling limits, instructor availability, downtime and full-cycle collection timing rather than pricing every scheduled hour as collected revenue.

Hypothetical arithmetic only: 40 × $80 = $3,200; specified $1,600 + $600 + $200 = $2,400 costs; remainder $800. Hours assumed completed and paid, with stated distinct cost allocations. Other staffing/administration/premises costs, repairs/investment, financing and tax excluded. Not real tuition, wages, fuel/insurance rates, complete annual SDE/EBITDA, business value or client results.
Invented completed-and-paid driving-hour groupAssumption/result
Completed paid instruction hours assumed40
Assumed realized receipt per completed hour$80
Specified hour-group receipts$3,200
Distinct specified instructor/preparation costs−$1,600
Distinct specified fleet/fuel costs−$600
Distinct specified insurance allocation−$200
Remainder after these specified costs$800

Use actual realized receipts, instructor work and fleet costs for the full program cycle. This limited group does not establish whole-school margins or future bookings.

Reconcile permanent work and vehicle inclusion

Use the coverage worksheet for instruction, preparation, scheduling, course administration, vehicle coordination and recordkeeping. Include recurring instructors/providers, preparation/cover, management, fleet use, fuel, maintenance, insurance, rent, materials, software/payment and shared costs. Support adjustments with the earnings bridge; do not remove every vehicle expense or owner salary, or deduct existing payroll twice.

Inspect offered vehicles and equipment appropriately, verifying title, leases, liens, service history, condition and required investment. Define liabilities and actual included/excluded assets with advisors. Avoid adding a fleet or goodwill already captured in a comparison or valuing leased vehicles as unrestricted owned property. Renewal and replacement needs require their own evidence, not a universal annual allowance.

Define program rights and unfinished student duties

As an Illinois example, the Secretary of State describes fee-based commercial school/instructor licensing and distinct training programs.

(Illinois Secretary of State: commercial driver training)

Have actual authorities and counsel assess the proposed buyer, jurisdiction, school/program, instructors, vehicles and premises conditions. This overview is separate from full administrative rules or transaction approval. Use the consent register for school/organization, vehicle lessor/lender, premises, curriculum and provider rights.

FTC security guidance addresses necessary access and protected information handling.

(FTC: protecting personal information in business)

Use approved aggregate/redacted student evidence with professional review of sensitive identity/licensing, child/personnel and incident records, notices, access and migration; an NDA alone is insufficient clearance. Assign prepaid instruction, credits/refunds, deposits, vehicle work and provider balances through the delivery guide. Keep historic collections, buyer operating assumptions and conditional proceeds separate. Educational tools do not issue a certified appraisal.

Owner questions

What driving-school multiple is established here?

No universal range is substantiated here; use actual closed evidence matched on programs, continuing earnings and fleet scope.

Should every car expense be an add-back?

Support each adjustment and include recurring instruction/fleet costs on the defined scope; owner use alone does not establish an adjustment.

Does the hour illustration estimate whole-school earnings?

It covers only stated completed paid hours and specified costs; full-cycle operating costs and earnings require separate reconciliation.

Put this decision into numbers.

Use explicit assumptions and keep the result as a starting point for your advisors.
