THE SHORT ANSWER

Value the actual gallery or framing operation after continuing artist, production and premises costs. Separate owned stock from consignments and customer property; define included inventory before applying going-concern evidence. The historical gallery sample below is not an isolated custom-frame-shop sample or current local appraisal. Gross customer collections, retail art labels and equipment replacement cost do not independently establish earnings or extra purchase value.

BizBuySell reports national completed art-gallery sales for 2021–2025. Its gallery scope can include consignment and retail framing/art-supply components.

(BizBuySell: art-gallery sold benchmarks)
Historical completed-sale owner discretionary earnings, not asking-price multiples. Gallery sample with possible ancillary framing/supplies; not an isolated custom-frame-shop benchmark, managed EBITDA, current local appraisal or guaranteed firm-specific range.

Seek completed comparisons matching the actual gallery/framing mix, scale, geography, date, collector/artist dependence, earnings definition, premises and included stock. A mostly custom-framing shop needs evidence appropriate to its production model rather than automatically inheriting the gallery range.

Reconcile consignments and cash before calling them earnings

Trace completed sales, discounts, receipts, artist balances and refunds through item and settlement records. Ask the accountant to determine the proper gross/net presentation for actual contracts. Amounts due to artists and customers are separate from freely available gallery funds.

Hypothetical arithmetic only: $10,000 − $6,000 − $500 = $3,500. Assumed distinct obligations; overhead, labor, other balances, tax and financing excluded. Not an accounting revenue classification, industry commission, annual earnings, valuation or client result.
Invented collected consignment-sale groupAssumption/result
Collected group receipts assumed$10,000
Distinct specified artist remittance due−$6,000
Distinct specified customer refund−$500
Remainder after those two specified amounts$3,500

Keep unsold consigned art, owned stock and customer property separate. Verify who retains unpaid artist balances, items already sold and remaining delivery duties; a wall inventory’s ticket prices are not automatically a saleable asset value.

Cost permanent design and framing work

Identify owner artist sourcing, collector advice, exhibitions, estimating, design, production, installation coordination and management using the coverage worksheet. Confirm actual skilled replacements, supplier access, compensation and workload after temporary seller assistance. Include materials used, labor, premises, maintenance, software, insurance and administration consistently.

Use the earnings bridge to distinguish working-owner SDE from earnings after permanent coverage. Support actual booked adjustments; unpaid owner effort is not an expense to add back. Avoid removing every owner salary, double deducting existing staff costs or treating routine machinery maintenance as universally nonrecurring. No automatic earnings-size switch or collector-list premium is supported here.

Define included stock, equipment and customer obligations

SBA sale guidance describes income, market and asset valuation approaches.

(SBA: closing or selling a business)

Define the selected method and included artwork, materials, machinery, goodwill and liabilities with advisers. Check actual title, consignment rights, leases/liens, condition, obsolescence and qualified investment estimates. Do not separately add stock or equipment already included in a comparable going-concern price. An individual artwork appraisal and a business appraisal assess different objects.

Review artist, image, premises/software and supplier rights through the consent register. Allocate open framing work, customer property, deposits, delivery/refunds and artist settlements through the delivery guide. Compare closing cash, contingent terms and funded duties on that scope. The scenario tool explores assumptions and does not certify an appraisal.

Owner questions

What does the gallery valuation table measure?

National historical 2021–2025 completed art-gallery owner discretionary earnings multiples; it is not a standalone custom-frame-shop sample.

Is collected consignment-sale cash all gallery earnings?

Reconcile artist remittances, refunds, other costs and actual accounting presentation before assessing supported earnings.

Should ticket-price inventory be added to a business multiple?

Verify ownership, condition and the comparable’s included stock/assets first; do not count included items twice.
